Questions people ask before trying a local AI tool

Mostly: "does this actually stay off the cloud?" Here's the straight answer, plus the rest.

Can I verify that ClerkBrain really keeps everything on-device and doesn't phone home?

ClerkBrain contains no code that uploads files, text or questions. The only network call it ever makes is an optional, one-time, checksum-verified download of the AI models from Hugging Face, started only when you press Download AI models. Full detail in the privacy policy.

Does ClerkBrain need an internet connection to work?

No, once set up. Keyword search and rules-based document reading work completely offline from the start; the optional AI models, once downloaded, also run fully offline.

How much will ClerkBrain cost?

ClerkBrain is free, with no account and no ads, distributed through the Microsoft Store.

Which version of Windows do I need?

Windows 10 or Windows 11 on an x64 PC.

What exactly does ClerkBrain look at on my PC?

Only the folders you explicitly add in Settings, with your Downloads folder suggested by default. It never reads a folder you haven't added.

If I uninstall ClerkBrain, what happens to the files it organized?

Files you kept, and files ClerkBrain moved or renamed at your request, stay exactly where they are. Uninstalling removes ClerkBrain's own catalog, settings, logs and downloaded AI models — not your documents.

Can ClerkBrain read a blurry scan or a photo taken with a phone?

Yes, via built-in optical character recognition. If a scan is too unclear to read confidently, it's flagged for your review with an AI double-check rather than silently filing a guess. See Tidy Up and How It Works.
